Vision correction continues to evolve

The cornea is a part of the eye that helps focus light to create an image on the retina. If the shape of the cornea and the eye are not perfect, the image on the retina is out-of-focus (blurred) or distorted. One of the trusted medical methods to recover from eyesight issues is Lasik laser vision correction surgery. In LASIK surgery, precise and controlled removal of corneal tissue by a special laser reshapes the cornea changing its focusing power. According to Glenn Hagele, Executive Director of the Council for Refractive Surgery Quality Assurance, as laser vision correction surgery continues to evolve; potential Lasik patients rely on Internet research and nonprofit organizations for information about Lasik and which doctor to choose.

All-laser LASIK, or bladeless LASIK, has been around for several years. The potential outcome is basically the same as traditional LASIK, an acronym for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. But it seems to be another step in the evolution of a procedure that has become more and more common. LASIK has a high success rate, but like any surgery there are risks. Patients could experience glare, halos or starbursts around lights and increased sensitivity to light, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Other side effects include hazy vision, poor night vision, and dryness of the eyes and reduced sharpness of vision.
